Letter to Scanmar Marine, dated Sept 23, 1985
Dear Hans and Carl:
I just completed a 28,000-mile almost circumnavigation (San Francisco to Newport Rhode Island the long way) in my Golden Gate 30 “World Citizen”. My cruise took 3-1/2 years and followed a route similar to yours on “Fia”. Thanks to your help and advice when I departed from San Francisco I was more than adequately outfitted in the self-steering department with a Monitor vane gear and Tillermaster autopilot. This combination was excellent and handled almost all situations. The Monitor did an amazing job when under sail except for very light airs. In those conditions and when motoring the Tillermaster took over. The bottom line is that during the entire trip I only hand steered about 12-hours total.
Thanks again for your help and for putting out a quality product. The Monitor defiantly gets my recommendation as being on of the finest vane gears available anywhere in the world.
